Robotic Surgery in India

Robotic surgery is a method to perform surgery using very small tools attached to a robotic arm. The surgeon controls the robotic arm with a computer. Robotic surgery, computer-assisted surgery, and robotically-assisted surgery are terms for technological developments that use robotic systems to aid in surgical procedures. Robotically-assisted surgery was developed to overcome the limitations of pre-existing minimally-invasive surgical procedures and to enhance the capabilities of surgeons performing open surgery.

Major advances aided by surgical robots have been remote surgery, minimally invasive surgery and unmanned surgery. Due to robotic use, the surgery is done with precision, miniaturization, smaller incisions; decreased blood loss, less pain, and quicker healing time. Articulation beyond normal manipulation and three-dimensional magnification helps resulting in improved ergonomics. Due to these techniques there is a reduced duration of hospital stays, blood loss, transfusions, and use of pain medication.[2] The existing open surgery technique has many flaws like limited access to surgical area, long recovery time, long hours of operation, blood loss, surgical scars and marks.

Types of Robotic Assisted Surgeries.

types of Robotic Surgeries are

Supervisory-Controlled systems (Computer Assisted Surgery): Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) represents a surgical concept and set of methods, that use computer technology for surgical planning, and for guiding or performing surgical interventions.

Robotic surgery is a minimally evasive procedure and latest procedure  used for treating the cancer. As compared to  standard laparoscopy and open surgeries ,Robotic surgery is more precise with less blood loss. In this surgery the procedure needs small incisions which are held by robotic arm that can lessen the trauma to the tissues. Robotic surgery is very safe and involves less pain and complications. The recovery period is also faster and requires a short stay at the hospital.

Robotic Orthopedic Surgery in India

The main advantages of robot-assisted orthopedic surgery over conventional orthopedic techniques are improved accuracy and precision in the preparation of bone surfaces, more reliable and reproducible outcomes, and greater spatial accuracy. Orthopedic surgery is ideally suited for the application of robotic systems. The ability to isolate and rigidly fix bones in known positions allows robotic devices to be securely fixed to the bone. As such, the bone is treated as a fixed object, simplifying the computer control of the robotic system. Commercially available robotic systems can be categorized as either passive or active devices, or can be categorized as positioning or milling/cutting devices. Applications of robot-assisted orthopedic surgery include total hip and knee replacement, tunnel placement for reconstruction of knee ligaments, and trauma and spinal procedures..

Robotic Hip Surgery
Hip impingement, torn labrum and osteoarthritis or arthritis are the most possible causes of Hip pain. The various surgeries performed to remove the hip pain are total hip replacement, arthroscopic hip surgery and hip resurfacing surgery, robotic surgery is the most modern and are employed through small “minimally invasive” incisions, which result in less scarring, and blood loss.

Ultimately, the patient can have a shorter hospital stay

The two surgical procedures that are specially designed to repair the damaged parts or portions of the hip joint are Arthroscopic hip surgery and Total hip replacement surgery.

Total Hip Replacement Surgery

total hip replacement (arthroplasty) procedure that is performed using a highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic arm system and main aadvantage of this surgey is “no muscles are cut in exposure or preparation of the hip joint. “It can be a treatment option for people suffering with either non-inflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease, and is designed to assist surgeons in attaining a new level of reproducible surgical precision in hip surgery. The operation is performed by initially preparing the femur (thigh bone) and remove just the amount of bone required for the tight placement of the implant in the bone. The implants are exceedingly resilient and lasts lifelong.

Ceramic Hip Implants: Ceramic is the 21st century answer to hip replacement as it is both hard and durable, it wears minimally and the material is widely deemed to have no toxic or side effects.

Direct Anterior Muscle-sparing Hip Arthroplasty

It allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip as opposed to the lateral (side) or the posterior (back) approach. This way, the hip can be replaced without detaching the muscle from the pelvis or femur during surgery. The most important muscles for hip function, the gluteal muscles that attached to the pelvis and femur, are left undisturbed and, therefore, do not require a healing process.

Short-stem Hip Implants Short stem hip implants have been introduced as a bone preserving surgery for younger and more active people undergoing hip arthroplasty. They are designed for small incision processes.

Robotic Hip Arthroscopy
It is the most modern surgery and are employed through small “minimally invasive” incisions, which result in less scarring, and blood loss.which aims to remove the debris from the hip joint.

Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery can  perform either  Total Knee replacement and partial knee replacement. In this surgery, the damaged  portion of the knee is resurfaced, without touching the patient’s healthy bone and surrounding tissue. The  implant is then fitted  in the joint to allow the knee to move smoothly:

Total Knee Arthroplasty

Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to restore the integrity and function of a joint. A joint can be restored by resurfacing the bones. Depending upon age, activity level and body the patients joints are modified. An artificial joint (called a prosthesis) may also be used. Various types of arthritis may affect the joints.
