Neurology in India

A neurological disorder is any disorder of the body nervous system. Structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves can result in a range of symptoms. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves make up the nervous system. Together they control all the workings of the body. When something goes wrong with a part of your nervous system, you can have trouble moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing, or learning. You can also have problems with your memory, senses, or mood.

There are more than 600 neurologic diseases. Major types include

  • Diseases caused by faulty genes, such as Huntington’s disease and muscular dystrophy
  • Problems with the way the nervous system develops, such as spina bifida
  • Degenerative diseases, where nerve cells are damaged or die, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Diseases of the blood vessels that supply the brain, such as stroke
  • Injuries to the spinal cord and brain
  • Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy
  • Cancer, such as brain tumors
  • infections, such as meningitis

Pediatric Neurology is specifically concerned with neurological problems with children under 18 years of age. It has been observed that a large number of children are suffering from neurological diseases and epilepsy. The main concern of a pediatric neurologist is to treat disorders of peripheral, central and autonomous nervous systems. Their primary role is to confront the unique symptoms of epilepsy in children.

Neurological Disorders in Children

  • Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit (ADD)
  • Headaches
  • Neuromuscular disorders

Symptoms of Neurological Disorders

Some common symptoms include –

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Headaches
  • Weakness
  • Tremor
  • Seizures

Neurological Diagnostic Tests

Diagnostic tests and procedures are vital tools that help physicians confirm or rule out the presence of a neurological disorder or other medical condition. Evaluating and diagnosing damage to the nervous system is complicated and complex. Many of the same symptoms happen in different combinations among the different disorders.

Neurological tests to evaluate children may include

  • Computed tomography scan (also called a CT or CAT scan)
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Electrodiagnostic tests (for example, electromyography and nerve conduction velocity)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Arteriogram (also called angiogram)
  • Cerebral spinal fluid analysis (also called spinal tap or lumbar puncture)
  • Evoked potentials. This test records the brain’s electrical response to visual, auditory, and sensory stimuli
  • Myelogram
  • Ultrasound (also called sonography)

Cost of Neurology

The cost of neurology and pediatric neurology treatment in India is very low as compared to other developed countries.
