Elbow Surgery in India
Elbow replacement is surgery to replace the elbow joint with artificial joint parts (prosthetics). elbow joints that are affected by arthritis can become painful, swollen and difficult to move. Replacements of the shoulder or elbow joint are procedures where the surfaces of a joint are replaced with parts made of metal and plastic. This operation is sometimes called arthroplasty. More than 90% patients who have undergone an elbow joint replacement consider artificial elbow a huge success.
Why the joint needs replacement
The most common reason for replacing the elbow joint is forarthritis, usually rheumatoid arthritis. However it may be necessary with osteo-arthritis (wear and tear) and following a fracture or bad
Types of Elbow Replacement Surgery
There are three types of Elbow Joint Replacement surgeries.
Tennis Elbow Replacement Surgery
Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition of the elbow caused by overuse. Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. The forearm muscles and tendons become damaged from overuse — repeating the same motions again and again. This leads to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow.
symptoms of tennis elbow include:
- Pain or burning on the outer part of your elbow
- Weak grip strength
Most surgical procedures for tennis elbow involve removing diseased muscle and reattaching healthy muscle back to bones. The right surgical approach for you will depend on a range of factors. These include the scope of your injury, your general health, and your personal needs.
The surgery involves removing the damaged joint components and replacing them with metal and plastic implants. One implant is attached to the humerus, another is attached to the ulna and the two are connected to form a hinge.
Elbow Arthritis Replacement Surgery
This is a disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds the joint becomes inflamed and thickened. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and eventually cause cartilage loss, pain, and stiffness.
Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of a group of disorders termed “inflammatory arthritis.”
During surgery 10 mm incision (cut) will be made, usually at the back of the elbow. After making the incision, Sugeon will gently move muscles aside to get access to the bone. After removing scar tissue and spurs around the joint, The surgeon will prepare the humerus to fit the metallic piece that will replace that side of the joint.
The replacement stems are placed into the humerus, and kept in place with a bone cement. The two stems are connected by a hinge pin. After the wound is closed, a padded dressing is then placed to protect the incision while it heals.
Arthroscopic Elbow Replacement Surgery
Arthroscopy is a procedure that orthopaedic surgeons use to inspect, diagnose, and repair problems inside a joint. The term literally means “to look within the joint.” During elbow arthroscopy, a small camera, called an arthroscope, is inserted into your elbow joint. The camera displays pictures on a television screen, and these images are used to guide miniature surgical instruments. This type of surgery is conducted to remove loose debris, bone spurs, loosening joint capsules and reviewing cartilage damage.
Total Elbow Replacement
Total Elbow Replacement is a surgery in which the functional mechanics of the joint are restored by removing scar tissues, balancing muscles and inserting a prosthetic joint in place of the destroyed one. After injecting local anesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision in the back side of the elbow joint and the tendons and ligaments are removed, exposing the joint. The joint surfaces of the ulna, humerus and radius are removed surgically.

The cost of Elbow Replacement Surgery in India is $6000, which is 25% cost (Which includes patients stay in a private room for 5 days , medicines, nursing care, food and airport pick up and drop ) as compared to cost in UK and USA.
